The human gene sequence has been reported by Dubin et al (1990). The 20 kDa protein alpha-B-crystallin is expressed constitutively in the lens together with Alpha-A-crystallin, where the two proteins serve as structural proteins. Alpha-B-crystallin gene mutations cause dominant congenital posterior polar cataract in humans (Berry et al, 2001).
