[B1 astrocyte]
The term B1 astrocytes has been used to refer to one of five identifiable cells types in the subventricular zone of the brain (B2 astrocytes, C cells, A cells, E cells) (Doetsch et al, 1997; Doetsch and Alvarez-Buylla, 1996). These cells share the expression of several markers with B2 astrocytes found in the same anatomical site but at a different location. B1 astrocytes are neurogenic quiescent neural stem cells and are being referred to usually as B1 type adult neural stem cells (or just B1 cells) (Nam and Benezra, 2009) These neural stem cells retain their ability to divide throughout the lifespan and express markers such as CD133
