[Drosophila melanogaster NEDD2-like caspase; NEDD2-like caspase] This enzyme is a member of a family of evolutionarily conserved cysteine protease proteins known as caspases. Many of these enzymes are part of a proteolytic cascade that plays a central role in cell death by apoptosis.
DRONC, encoded by gene CG8091, is one of several Drosophila melanogaster caspases. It is expressed ubiquitously during Drosophila melanogaster development and its expression is inducible by ecdyson (Dorstyn et al, 1986). The enzyme contains an N-terminal CARD domain and has a substrate specificity similar to mammalian caspase-2
