[coagulation factor XII] abbr. FXII, F12 (approved gene symbol). Factor XII is known mainly for its activity as a clotting factor (Hageman factor; abbr. HAF) (Ratnoff and Davie, 1964). In the nomenclature of enzymes the factor has been given the designation EC3.4.21.38.
Factor XII undergoes autocatalytic activation after binding to a negatively charged surface. This converts factor XII to factor XIIa (Silverberg et al, 1980). Factor XIIa generates more Factor XIIa from Factor XII and also converts prekallikrein to kallikrein. Kallikrein digests high molecular weight kininogen and generates
