[homing-associated cell adhesion molecule] This is a designation coined by Picker et al, 1989), for a protein identified as the Hermes antigen. This antigen was identified originally on lymphocytes, but has been shown to be expressed widely by a variety of non-hematopoietic cells, including follicular dendritic cells, glial cells, keratinocytes, and fibroblasts. Thus, this antigen appears to be a widely used cell adhesion molecule (Picker et al, 1989; Gallatin et al, 1989). Picker et al (1989) have reported identity of HCAM with the CD antigen CD44.
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD44.
