The approved gene symbol for this protein is RNF146 [RING finger protein 146]. The gene has been cloned by Von Rotz et al (2005) who referred to it as dactylidin (derived from Greek for ring). Iduna, named after the Norse goddess of protection and eternal youth, has been identified by Andrabi et al (2011). Human Iduna is a protein of 359 amino acids containing an N-terminal RING finger domain and a central WWE domain that has a poly(ADP-ribose) binding site.
