(a compound word derived from inflammation and ageing; sometimes inflamm-ageing) The term inflammaging has been proposed by Franceschi et al (2007) to refer to an age-related progressive low grade chronic pro-inflammatory status (see also: inflammation; see also: metaflammation). Inflammaging renders older subjects more susceptible to a poor prognosis following systemic insults (Franceschi et al, 2000; Nomellini et al, 2009) and is one of the major driving forces of frailty and of common severe age-related diseases (Vasto et al, 2007; Franceschi et al, 2007).
