[lung-specific X protein] LUNX is a human lung-specific gene overexpressed in non-small-cell lung-cancer tumor cells (Iwao et al, 2001). Several lines of evidence suggest that detection of LUNX may be of diagnostic utility in the detection of non-small cell lung cancer and micrometastases (Cheng et al, 2008) as well as circulating tumor cells (Mitas et al, 2003). Loukopoulos P et al (2007) have suggested that gain of LUNX expression predicts patient outcome in pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
Sequence analysis shows that LUNX is identical with SPLUNC-1 (see: PLUNC) and may play a role in innate immunity.
