[MLE-like protein 1] This protein is considered to be the mammalian counterpart of Drosophila melanogaster maleless (MLE; gene: CG11680), an ATP-dependent helicase with the ability to unwind DNA/RNA or RNA/RNA substrates in vitro (see also: RHA [RNA helicase A; ATP-dependent RNA helicase A]). MLE is a component of the male-specific lethal (MSL) complex of Drosophila remodels the chromatin of the X chromosome in males to enhance the level of transcription of most X-linked genes, and thereby achieve dosage compensation (Morra et al, 2011). For a role ininnate immunity see: DHX36.
