[Nasopharyngeal carcinoma-related protein] NASG is a tissue-specific gene of the human nasopharyngeal epithelium isolated by suppression subtractive hybridization. Its expression is down-regulated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (Zhang et al, 2003), suggesting that NASG may act as a tumor suppressor in this type of cancer (Liu ZQ et al, 2005). He Y et al (2005) have reported an association of NASG gene polymorphisms with susceptibility to nasopharyngeal carcinoma in a Chinese population.
The protein is identical with SPLUNC-1 (see: PLUNC) and may play a role in innate immunity.
