[nephrin-like-2] NEPH2 (779 amino acids) is a member of the nephrin-like protein family. The genes are expressed in kidney podocytes (Sellin et al, 2003). The gene encoding NEPH2 has been isolated by Nagase et al (2001) as KIAA1867, which is expressed highly in the brain but not in other tissues. The protein is identical with KIRRE, a protein that is important for in vitro proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells. The approved gene symbol for this protein is KIRREL3 [kin of IRRE like 3].
