Necrostatin-1 is a small molecule inhibitor identified originally in a chemical library screen as a potent and specific inhibitor of a kind of cell death referred to as necroptosis (see also: regulated necrosis). Necrostatin-1 (5-(1H-indol-3-ylmethyl)-3-methyl-2-thioxo-4-imidazolidinone) and related compounds are members of a series of [1,2,3]thiadiazole benzylamides generally referred to as necrostatins (Teng et al, 2007).
Usually, it does not protect against caspase-dependent apoptosis, or against other programmed cell death, such as autophagy (Degterev et al, 2005).
