A class of cytolytic proteins that make membranes permeable by polymerizing in the presence of calcium and by forming transmembrane channels. These proteins, together with Leukalexins, and NKCF (natural killer cytotoxic factor) are the major factors responsible for the cytotoxic activities of lymphocytes. They may be important, therefore, in Adoptive immunotherapy involving the use of lymphokine-activated killer cells (see: LAK cells).
