Phormicins are insect defensins from the black blowfly Phormica terranovae (Northern blowfly; Lucilia terraenovae). These peptides are found in the immune hemolymph and are active against Gram-positive bacteria (Cociancich et al, 1993; Dimarcq et al, 1990; Lambert et al, 1989). The proteins show extensive homology with Royalisin from the honeybee Apis mellifera L.
The sequence of Phormicin is ATCDLLSGTGINHSACAAHCLLRGNRGGYCNGKGVCVCRN.
