abbr. and approved gene symbol: PIP (a term with multiple meanings), so named because its expression is inducible by prolactin (Shiu and Iwasiow, 1985). The human gene has been cloned by Myal et al (1991).
This secreted protein has been described independently as a salivary protein named EP-GP [Extraparotid Glycoprotein] (Rathman et al, 1989) that has the ability to bind to several bacteria (Schenkels et al, 1993, 1997). The protein is found in human secretions (saliva, sweat, tears, nasal mucus, cerumen, seminal plasma) (Schenkels et al, 1991).
