abbr. PLF (a term with multiple meanings). This secreted glycoprotein (244 amino acids; 34 kDa, 21.5 kDa unglycosylated) was characterized initially as a mRNA expressed > 60-fold a few hours after stimulation of resting Swiss murine 3T3 cells with serum or PDGF (Linzer and Nathans, 1984, 1985; Linzer et al, 1985). Linzer and Nathans (1985) have reported that proliferin is a glycoprotein secreted by placenta. By sequence homologies, proliferin is a nonclassical member of the prolactin and growth hormone family of proteins. Soares et al (2007) have proposed the term Prl2c1 [prolactin family 2 subfamily C member 1] for this protein.
