[SSEA-4(+), SSEA-4(-)]
[stage-specific embryonic antigen-4] SSEA-4 (also: MC813-70 antigen; named after a monoclonal antibody) represents a carbohydrate epitope of a glycolipid containing the common core structure (Gal-alpha-l)-(4Gal-beta-1)-(4Glc or GalNAcbeta-1)-(3Gal-alpha-1)-(4Gal). SSEA-4 is a stage-specific embryonic antigen found on human teratocarcinoma cells (Kannagi et al, 1983). It is also the basis of the LKE blood group.
The antigen can be identified on human embryonic stem cells (Brimble et al, 2007). It may play a role during cellular differentiation but does not play a critical functional role in maintaining the pluripotency of these cells
