[Yersinia outer protein J] This secreted protein is encoded by a gene on the virulence plasmid pIB1 that is found in several species of the enteropathogen Yersinia (Yersinia pestis, Y. pseudotuberculosis, and Y. enterocolitica) (Cornelis, 2000). YopJ is an indispensable virulence determinant of these enteropathogens (Galyov et al, 1994).
The protein is translocated to the eukaryotic cell together with several other virulence proteins. YopJ protein has been shown to inhibit TNF-alpha production by macrophages and to downregulate the MAP kinases p38 and JNK (Palmer et al, 1998, 1999; Orth et al, 1999). YopJ inhibits the activation of transcription factor NF-kappa-B
