[Immune Deficiency] This Drosophila melanogaster gene (CG5576) plays a central role in the control of immune responses towards bacterial infections in Drosophila melanogaster. The protein contains a death domain similar to that of mammalian RIP, which is known to play a role in both NF-kappa-B activation and apoptosis. imd is involved also in the apoptotic response to UV irradiation. Overexpression of imd leads to constitutive transcription of some genes, including Caspase DREDD, and to cell death by apoptosis. Both effects can be blocked by coexpression of the caspase inhibitor
