This term, unlike the term cancer immunosurveillance, which pertains to the elimination of cancer cells by the immune system, refers to the observation that the immune system can have host-protective as well as tumor-promoting actions on developing cancers (Pagés and Kroemer, 2011; Schreiber et al, 2011; Mittal et al, 2014; Teng et al, 2015).
