Called also mitochondrial apoptosis (mitochondria-dependent apoptosis) or type 2 apoptosis.
It has been suggested that the term intrinsic apoptosis (see also: apoptosis) be used for cell death processes that are mediated by mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (Galluzzi et al, 2012). Inevitably this is associated with the dissipation of the mitochondrial transmembrane potential, the cessation of mitochondrial ATP synthesis and transport activities dependent on membrane potential, the release of cytochrome C, and the inhibition of the respiratory chain. Many different signaling events can trigger intrinsic apoptosis and the process may involve processes dependent on the activation of caspases or processes that do not depend on it (Kroemer et al, 2007).
