This protein has been identified as an inhibitor of phospholipase (Hirata et al, 1981). Hirata et al (1981) have suggested that autoantibodies against lipomodulin may play a role in certain symptoms of rheumatic diseases, especially by the formation of prostaglandins and other metabolites of arachidonic acid. Akasaki et al (1985) have reported that a kallikrein-like enzyme, termed GEF [glycosylation enhancing factor] (Iwata et al, 1983) and bradykinin induce the activation of protein kinase C for the phosphorylation of lipomodulin. Because lipomodulin loses phospholipase inhibitory activity after phosphorylation, increased phospholipase A2 activity would be expressed by this process.
