This protein has been identified as an inhibitor of phospholipase (Hirata et al, 1981). Hirata et al (1981) have suggested that autoantibodies against lipomodulin may play a role in certain symptoms of rheumatic diseases, especially by the formation of prostaglandins and other metabolites of arachidonic acid. Akasaki et al (1985) have reported that a kallikrein-like enzyme, termed GEF [glycosylation enhancing factor] (Iwata et al, 1983) and bradykinin induce the activation of protein kinase C for the phosphorylation of lipomodulin. Because lipomodulin loses phospholipase inhibitory activity after phosphorylation, increased phospholipase A2 activity would be expressed by this process. The protein is most likely the same as renocortin and macrocortin (Rothhut et al, 1983). The protein is identical with Annexin-1
