This term has been coined to describe a rapid destruction of the youngest circulating erythrocytes, termed neocytes, observed in astronauts under adaptation to microgravity conditions. This rapid fall in red cell mass by hemolysis occurs too fast to be explained by by diminished red-cell production and is thought to be a process of selective cell destruction (Alfrey et al, 1997). Rice et al (2001) have reported that neocytolysis also occurs on descent from altitude. Rice et al (1999) have reported that neocytolysis can contribute to the anemia of renal disease. Wittmann et al (2007) have reported that anaemia in diabetes mellitus and/or chronic renal failure may be caused by a decreased production of erythropoietin and may induce erythropoietin resistance. In these patients, acetylsalicylic acid treatment increases
