These cells are part of the insect excretory system (Denholm and Skaer, 2009).
Nephrocytes are derived from the embryonic mesoderm and many persist through metamorphosis into adult life Ward and Skeath, 2000; Sellin et al, 2006). As such, nephrocytes represent an ancestral blood filtration system, functioning as scavenger cells. Nephrocytes are specialised cells that are involved in ultrafiltration processes, having the capacity to sequester and store material from the hemolymph. The cells are giant cells that are highly active in clathrin-mediated endocytosis (Aggarwal and King, 1967; Narita et al, 1989; Weavers et al, 2009; Das et al, 2008). The cells form a slit diaphragm-like structure and thus resemble podocytes
