[nurse macrophage]
This term for macrophages performing functions of nurse cells has been used to describe the central macrophage in erythroblastic islands. Nurse macrophages are thought to provide nutrients and proliferative and survival signals to the erythroblasts (Manwani D and Bieker, 2008). The term is used also in other circumstances. See: self-renewing monocytoid cells.
