[pigment-concentrating hormone]
these hormones, sometimes collectively referred to as chromatophorotropins or chromatophorotropic hormones, have been described first in crustaceans. They are synthesized in the X-organ and sinus gland located in the eye stalk (Mangerich et al, 1986; Rodríguez-Sosa et al, 1994), and are involved in light-dark adaptation, and regulate reversible colour changes observed in these animals by eliciting the translocation (aggregation) of pigment granules within specialized epithelial cells known as chromatophores.
