10K protein

This protein of 10 kDa is expressed from early stages in the embryonic chicken lens. Its expression strongly correlates with cell differentiation in the developing chicken lens. Northern blot analysis shows that the protein is expressed widely in mouse tissues.

Chicken 10K protein and the orthologous proteins from mouse and human lenses have been identified by protein sequencing and cloning to be identical with MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor), identified originally in activated human T-cells.
