The 5q minus syndrome is a chromosomal aberration characterized by interstitial deletions of parts of the long arm of human chromosome 5. By using tumor-specific and clonal markers, Kroef et al (1993) have demonstrated that the 5q minus anomaly is restricted to cells of myeloid origin, leaving lymphoid cells unaffected (see also: hematopoiesis). Godon et al (2000) have demonstrated the presence of the 5q deletion in the lineage of megakaryocytes and, thus, the involvement of these cells in the disease process.
