5q minus syndrome

The 5q minus syndrome is a chromosomal aberration characterized by interstitial deletions of parts of the long arm of human chromosome 5. By using tumor-specific and clonal markers, Kroef et al (1993) have demonstrated that the 5q minus anomaly is restricted to cells of myeloid origin, leaving lymphoid cells unaffected (see also: hematopoiesis). Godon et al (2000) have demonstrated the presence of the 5q deletion in the lineage of megakaryocyes and, thus, the involvement of these cells in the disease process.

Affected patients develop myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS; refractory anemia). This syndrome is a heterogeneous group of therapeutically refractory pre-leukemic disorders resulting from the aberrant development of clonal hematopoietic stem cells ... ... ... ... ...
