The monoclonal antibody of the same name has been raised in mice against cultured human endothelial cells and screened for their ability to stain intercellular contacts (Lampugnani et al, 1992).
7B4 immunoprecipitates an integral membrane glycoprotein of 140 kD from extracts of cultured endothelial cells. The protein is expressed mainly at inter-endothelial junctions. The 7B4 antigen is not expressed in fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and keratinocytes. The N-terminal amino acid sequence is identical to a member of the cadherin family, cadherin-5, identified by Suzuki et al (1991).
