this term pertains to peripherally localized large diameter bundles of afferent sensory neurons and motor neurons with myelinated axons and high conduction velocity (unlike C-fibers) (for overview see also: Smith and Lewin, 2009; Djouhri and Lawson, 2004; Dubin and Patapoutian, 2010; Lewin and Moshourab, 2004). Some of these fibers are involved in pain sensation processing and are being referred to sometimes as A-nociceptors.
• A-alpha fibers are primary receptors. They respond to non-noxious mechanical stimuli (light touch, stretch, vibration, and hair movement) and connect to the muscle spindle and the proprioceptive sensory receptor organ known as Golgi tendon organ located at the insertion of skeletal muscle fibers onto the tendons of skeletal muscle.
