A54 peptide
This cancer-targeting peptide with the sequence AGKGTPSLETTP has been identified by phage display library screening (Du et al, 2010). The peptide shows specific binding for hepatocellular carcinoma cells. doxorubicin functionalized with this peptide blocks proliferation of liver cancer cells in vitro and reduces tumor size and prolongs long-term survival in xenograt-bearing mice.
Gold nanoshells functionalized with the peptide and conjugated with doxorubicin show enhanced uptake by hepatocellular carcinoma cells and enhance cell death by apoptosis when chemotherapy is combined with hyperthermia (Liang et al, 2014).
