(approved gene symbol) [apoptosis antagonizing transcription factor] AATF is a nuclear phospoprotein of 523 amino acids has been identified as an interaction partner for ZIPK, a nuclear serine/threonine-specific protein kinase the overexpression of which induces cell death by apoptosis (Page et al, 1999). The protein has been identified independently as Che-1.
Lindfors et al (2000) have identified AATF as a gene the expression of which is downregulated by TGF-beta in human intestinal cells. They have reported that human AATF mRNA is expressed at high levels in human brain, heart, thymus, kidney, and placenta and at lower levels in skeletal muscle and colon. The gene has been mapped to chromosome 17q11.2-q12.
