[ADAM family]
ADAM is an acronym for 'a disintegrin and metalloprotease '. These proteins constitute one subfamily of the so-called adamalysins, which are a protein family in the metzincin superfamily of metalloproteases (Killar et al, 1999). The proteins are also being referred to as MDC proteins [metalloproteinase-like disintegrin-like cysteine-rich]. Members of this large and conserved protein family have been isolated from a variety of organisms, including mammals, reptiles and invertebrates (for overview see also: Reiss and Saftig, 2009). These proteins are related to crotalid and viperid snake venom zinc metalloproteases (SVMPs [
