[disintegrin and metalloprotease domain 23] This protein is a member of the ADAM protein family. The gene symbol and alternative name is MDC-3. ADAM23 is considered a literature alias and is identical with ADAM28.
ADAM23 is expressed at high levels in the brain (Sagane et al, 1998; Novak, 2004), is localized on the cell surface (Goldsmith et al, 2004), and is essential for normal brain function. Knock-out mice lacking expression of ADAM23 exhibit ataxia, tremor and short life spans (Mitchell et al, 2001). Some of the bioactivities of ADAM23 may be due to the fact that it serves as a ligand for binding protein (see: LGI1, LGI4). Sagane et al (2008) have suggested that ADAM23 may function as an LGI1 receptor in cells that do not express ADAM22.
For other entries pertaining to metalloproteinases see also the Metalloproteinase Dictionary section of this encyclopedia.
