[a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain 26; ADAM metallopeptidase domain 26] The gene encoding this member of the ADAM protein family of metalloproteases has been identified by Zhu et al (199) in a search of proteases that may function in spermatogenesis or fertilization. The gene appears to encode a testis-specific protease and the gene is transcribed in spermatogenic cells in a regulated pattern at a specific developmental stage. The authors have named this protease testase 3, in view of its tissue-specific expression.
