[a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain 6; ADAM metallopeptidase domain 6] This protein is a member of the ADAM protein family (Yamamoto et al, 1999). The gene is transcribed in somatic cells and germ cells in mouse testis but its role is not known (Choi et al, 2004). Marcello et al (2011) have reported that ADAM6 is not expressed in sperms of knock-out mice lacking expression of the tyrosylprotein sulfotransferase tpst-2 but its role in the sperm surface proteome is not known.
The human gene is C14orf96 [chromosome 14 open reading frame 96] and is thought to be a pseudogene.
