[apoptosis-like cell death] This term pertains to a mechanism of cell death observed in lower organisms such as yeast and fungi. It resembles apoptosis in that it involves chromatin fragmentation and condensation, and translocation of phosphatidylserine to the outer layer of the cellular membrane (Madeo et al, 1997). The process can be promoted by the introduction of mammalian BAX or prevented by introduction of mammalian BCL2 (Ligr et al, 1998; Manon et al, 1997; Longo et al, 1997).
