[Adenine nucleotide translocator] The protein is known also as ADP/ATP translocase, or Adenine nucleotide translocator. There are three isoforms of this homodimeric protein (Battini et al, 1997; Neckelmann et al, 1987; Cozens et al, 1989). The three isoforms of the translocator protein are encoded by differentially regulated nuclear genes (Stepien et al, 1992). ANT protein is the most abundant mitochondrial protein and forms a gated pore in the inner mitochondrial membrane that plays a key role in high-energy phosphate metabolism by allowing the flux of ATP from the matrix into the cytoplasm. The protein is part of the permeability transition pore complex (PTPC), the extended opeing of which is sufficient to trigger an increase in mitochondrial membrane permeability and apoptosis
