[apolipoprotein C1; also: apolipoprotein C-I] Human APOC1 (also: APOC-I) is a secreted protein of 57 amino acids produced by several organs, including the liver, which is the predominant producer (Lauer et al, 1988). In plasma, the protein is found bound to chylomicrons, very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), and high density lipoproteins (Shulman et al, 1975).
APOC1 has several roles in lipid metabolism and transport. The protein inhibits VLDL binding to both the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor and the LDL receptor-related protein (Sehayek and Eisenberg, 1991; Weisgraber et al, 1990). Apolipoprotein C1 has been shown to be involved in the regulation of lipase (Poensgen, 1990; Conde-Knape et al, 2002; van der Hoogt et al, 2006).
