This peptide, Ala-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly, has been selected from a phage display peptide library as a cell-targeting peptide that specifically binds to angiogenic endothelial cells in tumor tissues and blocks tumor angiogenesis (Oku et al, 2002; Asai et al, 2002). Liposomes bearing this peptide and containing adriamycin accumulate in tumor tissues and effectively suppress tumor growth in xenotransplanted mice with Meth-A sarcoma and Colon 26 NL-17 cells (Maeda et al, 2004; Shimizu et al, 2005). Adriamycin-loaded APRPG-coated liposomes have been shown also to cause regression in a hypovascular orthotopic pancreatic tumor model (Yonezawa et al (2007).
