this term has been coined by Iwasawa et al (2011). It refers to a tripartite protein complex consisting of the proform of caspase-8, and two proteins called FIS1 and BAP31.
The ARCosome spans the interface between two critical organelles involved in cell death by apoptosis, mitochondria, and the endoplasmic reticulum and serves as a platform to activate the initiator caspase-8. This complex serves to transmit an apoptosis signal from the mitochondria to the endoplasmic reticulum. BAP31 is cleaved and activated during the process, and the ARCosome is suggested to function as a genuine signaling complex, and not only a structural component in the cell that tethers the mitochondria to the endoplasmic reticulum.
