Name (derived from the first four identical aminoterminal amino acids) for a family of proteins isolated originally from snake venom and frog skin secretions. Homologs of these proteins are present in many vertebrate species. These proteins contain 80-90 amino acids, 10 of which are cysteines with identical spacing. Family members include Bv8 (Bombina variagata peptide 8), kineticins (prokineticin-1), EG-VEGF, and mamba intestinal protein 1 (MIT1) (Kaser et al, 2003).
