An acronym for 'Avian WAP motif containing, Kunitz domain containing'. This avian protein of 767 amino acids (81 kDa protein) has been identified by Nile et al (2006). The protein contains a WAP domain and Kunitz protease inhibitory modules and probably possesses proteinase inhibitor activity. The AWAK gene is expressed in epithelial cells of the chicken intestine.
A 3.5 kDa C-terminal fragment of AWAK retaining the WAP domain has been shown to possess antimicrobial activity and may play a role in innate immunity. Townes et al (2006) have referred to the peptide fragment as AWAP IV. AWAP IV
