Mammalian cells possess two different genes encoding Aconitase. Both proteins contain iron clusters. The approved gene symbol for the cytosolic protein is ACO1 [Aconitase-1]; abbr. also: ACONS [aconitase, soluble]. The protein is known also as soluble aconitate hydratase or Cytoplasmic aconitate hydratase or Citrate-isocitrate hydrolyase, (EC4.2.1.3).
The mitochondrial enzyme is encoded by gene ACO2 [aconitase-2], which is being referred to also as ACONM [mitochondrial aconitase]. This gene has been cloned
