[astrocyte-derived immune suppressor factor] This factor of 228 amino acids is produced by astrocytes. AdIF protein is found at inflammatory sites in the brains of mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. It is bound to the surface of infiltrating CD4(+) T-cells. Purified recombinant AdIF protein inhibits the proliferation of activated proteolipid protein-reactive CD4(+) T-cells and induces cell death by apoptosis in these cells in vitro.
