Agrin is a major large, highly negatively charged multidomain heparan sulfate proteoglycan (>500 kDa) of the extracellular matrix (ECM) with a calculated relative molecular mass of more than 200 kDa for the protein core (Tsen et al, 1995). The protein contains a number of structural domains, including regions of homology to laminin, Kazal protease inhibitors, and EGF repeats.
