Alarin (25 amino acids), so named because it has an N-terminal alanine and a C-terminal serine, is a splice variant of the hypothalamic neuropeptide galanin-like peptide (GALP). It contains the first 5 amino acids of galanin-like peptide, followed by 20 unique amino acids that do not not show any homology to other proteins. Mouse Alarin (APAHRSSPFPPRPTRAGRETQLLRS) and human Alarin (APAHRSSPFPKWVTKTERGRQPLRS) only show approximately 60 % sequence identity (Santic et al, 2007).
Santic et al (2006) have reported expression of Alarin in ganglia of human ganglioneuroma and ganglioneuroblastoma, as well as differentiated tumor cells of neuroblastoma
