Alphaviruses are members of the arbovirus group. The prototype of alphaviruses is Sindbis virus.
Ross River virus 6K protein and Barmah Forest virus 6K protein have been shown to act as a viroporin and form ion-selective channels in membranes. This is thought to play a role in virus budding (Melton et al, 2002). Sindbis virus 6K protein has been shown to be involved in virus budding (Loewy et al, 1995). Sanz et al (2003) have implicated the Sindbis 6K protein in virus budding and modification of membrane permeability. Antoine et al (2007) have shown that Sindbis 6K protein specifically triggers a sequential cascade of events that leads to cytoplasmic calcium elevation and cell permeabilization. Sanz et al (1994) have reported that Semliki Forest virus 6K protein
