[Alu RNA]
These non-coding RNAs, called also Alu transcripts, are encoded by Alu elements (called also Alu sequences, Alu repeats; Alu interspersed repeats), an abundant class of middle repetitive DNA sequences that exists in the human genome in about 1.5 million copies interspersed throughout the genome and makes up more than 10 % of the human genome (Deininger and Batzer, 2002; Howard and Sakamoto, 1990; Mighell et al, 1997). Alu repeats span approximately 300 nucleotides and are thought to have originated from duplication of the ancestral 7SL RNA
