This protein, also known as ameloblastin enamel matrix protein (abbr. AMBN), is expressed by ameloblasts during the differentiation of inner enamel epithelium. The rat and human genes encoding ameloblastin have been cloned (Krebsbach et al, 1996; Toyosawa et al 2000).
Ameloblastin is a minor protein of the enamel matrix. Ameloblastin may be a growth factor for periodontal ligament cells and also increases cell attachment. It modulates bone morphogenetic protein expression and downregulates the expression of collagen type 1 (Zeichner-David et al, 2006). Iwata et al (2007) have reported that the metalloproteinase MMP-20 can cleave ameloblastin.
