This protein, also known as ameloblastin enamel matrix protein (abbr. AMBN), is expressed by ameloblasts during the differentiation of inner enamel epithelium. The rat (see: Amelin) and human genes encoding ameloblastin have been cloned (Krebsbach et al, 1996; Toyosawa et al, 2000). Ameloblastin I and ameloblastin II are the two proteins translated from the rat ameloblastin gene. Both proteins are produced by ameloblasts, but ameloblastin II is expressed more strongly at the late maturation stage and less at the secretory stage (Lee et al, 2003).
